UK public sector net borrowing (excluding public sector banks) was GBP -18.3 billion in August 2026, higher than the GBP -15.4 billion in the same month last year and market expectations of GBP -15.7 billion. This marked the second highest August on record (not adjusted for inflation), behind that of 2020, and GBP 3.5 billion above the OBR forecast.
