28 September 2001, 13:08 U.S. shares ended mixed Wednesday
with technologies weak in an otherwise firm market. The Dow Industrials ended up 114.03, or 1.3 percent, at 8681.42. The S&P 500 and Wilshire 5000 were both up about 1 percent. Technologies were weak, with the Nasdaq Composite down 3.33 at
1460.71 and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index down more than 2
percent. Dealers said a bright spot for the session was strong buying
during the afternoon, perhaps by managers rebalancing portfolios at the
end of the quarter, that pushed most indexes to their highs at the
close.
