TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Domestic wholesale prices in August fell 0.9 pct year-on-year, the largest decline since September 1999, due to falls in prices of electric devices, the Bank of Japan said. The bank attributed the decline to falling demand for devices such as DRAMs for PC use, as well as SRAM and flash memory for mobile phones. "The price decline of electric devices is mainly due to the slowdown of PC demand in the US, as well as mobile phone demand falling in Europe," a bank official said. "Demand for PCs in Japan also started to show some negative movement." Wholesale prices of electric machinery, including electric devices such as microchips, were down 0.4 pct year-on-year. In August, steel prices fell 0.3 pct year-on-year due to continued production falls by makers amid rising inventories, the official added.
