London, August 20 (BridgeNews) - The government recorded an
unexpectedly impressive net cash repayment of 9.282 billion sterling in
July, well above the 7.637 billion sterling surplus in 2000 and forecasts
of around 6.5 billion sterling. There were healthy receipts of income tax
and corporation tax, which outstripped a big but unremarkable increase in
spending. There were a boost of around 700 million sterling from the
privatization of air traffic control services.
The cumulative net cash requirement for the year now stands at a
surplus of 2.914 billion sterling, well short of last year's surplus of
19.462 billion sterling. Last year's figure, however, was enormously
inflated by the sale of mobile phone licenses.
Total government receipts were 8.8% higher than the same month last
year, but the cumulative total for the year is now 6.8% lower than in the
same period last year.
On the spending side, the government appeared to be continuing to push
through its planned increases. Net department outlays rose 7.6% on the
same month last year and are now cumulatively 10.3% higher than last year.
