17 May 2001, 12:00 US Port Officials Says Trade Volumes Flat in April
April trade volumes were essentially flat versus the prior month and the prior
year, after rebounding from February's sharp declines, say U.S. cargo
and port officials. Their reports suggest no further narrowing of the
trade gap for the time being from February's dramatic drop -- as imports
firmed through March and April, while exports were mixed at best. Steady
import flows also broadly suggest no consumer downturn since the latest
comparisons are to a year ago, when domestic economic activity was at a
peak, they add. The nation's two largest ports, Los Angeles and Long
Beach, showed no real consistency in the quantity of goods entering and
leaving.
